I cannot find anyone locally who will mess with lock rings anymore - so I do it myself.

You need a flap in the tire (spokes ends are hard on tubes) - and do not use any sort of tape = too dangerous
Check tire casings for stickers inside - stickers eat tubes.
Talc the tire casing and tube (there is such thing as tire talc, but Johnsons Baby Powder works fine).
Build a platform for the hub so that you have clearance for the tire casing to "flop" as far on inside rim as possible
Stick the end of the lock ring in and walk it around - I usually just wear gym shoes
I usually then finish paint on rim edge.
And, then take to a tire store with a cage and have them inflated.

A 600/650 may get a little lost in the wheel wells (look undersized ......).
And, a 700 in the sidemount wells may be a bit too big for the opening
My best advice is to find a car you like the looks of and then ask the owner what they have going on for tire size for 4 wheels on ground and then sidemounts.

I have not been able to find a tire with that tread pattern in a 600/650 17.

It looks like I will end up with the Coker Firestone, mostly because they are close to us in TN and I found out for an extra $10 per tire I can get a 5 year protection plan on the tire including whitewall damage, they pay for shipping both ways.

Now to find a shop who will deal with the lock ring wheels :)

This picture has been around. The car on the right has Goodrich Silvertown tires and the car on the left has Firestones

The Firestone Balloon tire has a tread pattern just like the originals. The smallest size it comes in is 17 x 700 blackwall or double whitewall.
I've bought photos from the Museum. I find Jon Bill's book on Auburn Automobiles to be really helpful. His is also a wealth of information.
Just thinkin out loud. DK

The 1932 Auburn Salesman Handbook and the Dealer Handout flyer call out four ply 17 x 5.50, 6.00, or 6.50 for 8 cylinder cars. It also calls out six ply 17 x 6.00, 6.50 or 7.00 tires for 12 cylinder cars. The 1933 Salon Salesman Handbook says the same thing.
There is a four page article in the Feb 1932 Automobile Digest Magazine that list all the specs for the 8-98 and 8-98A. It calls out 17 x 6.50 tires.
I think the ply rating applies to the cars weight. If you want to run todays tires at todays speeds on todays roads, you may want to consider the tire ply. Bias ply tires generate a lot of heat in the sidewalls. A four ply tire could be rated for 955 pounds. 955 x 4 gives you 3820 pounds. Our cars can weigh that much and more.
I'll look for that dealer photo.

According to Clymer's Data Book of Tires originally an 8-98 would have come with a 6.00-17. The 12-160 would have come with 6.00-17 HD. With the HD signifying 6 ply tires.

Hey Dave do you have that pix of the showroom floor handy? I think that it shows a car with the tread pattern . I cannot find it in our computer.

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

I wrote a nice long answer but the website timed out. I believe the 12 cylinder cars were the only ones with 17 x 7:00 six ply. If you have the old Newsletters, check out Oct 1968 and Nov/Dec 1968. All the specs for the 8-98 are listed in those two issues.
