Few if any of the cars in Elbert's book look like they did then.A good example is J357,a Murphy CC then owned by Melvin Clemans.
J212 was a wreck when I saw it.It was an unusual phaeton with a
weird moulding on the body.SJ528 looked like the back side of a bad
day in 1953 but it sure looks good now.It is a Brunn CS,one of three built.

Mark McCourt wrote the original article (and deserves credit for good work), with most of the historical info supplied by your friendly local Can-Am Duesenberg historian.

The car looks now as it did originally and nothing like the picture in Elbert, for which the world can be grateful.

The more lengthy original article which is well written doesn't include the "tub" phrase. The original also has some nice photos of the car. Link below.

"Tub" was a common term used by Street Rodder's in the 70's usually referring to Touring or Phaeton built by Ford. I've also heard it used in place of some thing like "Basket Case".

Bob,

They originally had a rubber mat up front, carpeting in the rear.

The "Hemmings" article was a mini-version of a larger article in "Hemmings Classic Car "some time back.

I think this car has been restored to look like it should. This make over IMHO was one of the better looking jobs and as Melvin Clemans used to say,it wasn't remade to look like a 1937 Plymouth.
I have never heard "tub"used as a description but have used "crate" and "heap" one more than one occasion myself.

Hello Bob,

here is a link to an old photo of J-329, I don't know if that Body-Design is the original (as build in 1931) Murphy design.

For me it looks like the car has been restyled in the "Zeitgeist" of the late 30ies/early 40ies

"Tub" used to be a fairly common nickname for a phaeton.

I havent seen the article, but would assume that his word choice harkens back to that old slang usage.

The current issue of HMN has a one page article with photos of J-329/2345. I found it interesting the author chose to describe the Murphy convertible sedan as a "tub".
