Just wondering why some one would change only the bell housing? They don't wear out, do they?

the Walker Legrande SJ convertible coupe has bell housing J-515, but it's original # was J-530. The chassis # is 2563. This was only a bell housing change, it retains the original SJ engine.

The Academy of Art Automotive Museum in San Francisco says it has 6 Duesenbergs. It gives the engine numbers of two: J-262 and J-546. What are the engine numbers of the others:

A: 35 SJ Murphy Convertible Coupe once owned by William Randolph Hearst (p 1 of their website)
B: 29 J Murphy Clear Vision Sedan (p4)
C: 30 J Dual Cowl Phaeton (p9)
D: 35 SJ Walker LaGrande Convertible Coupe (p10)

Thanks
