Oil Leak in 1936 Cord 810 was created by Jenkins
Good Afternoon Cord Experts: My 1936 Cord 810 developed a serious oil leak this fall, and it appears that most of the transmission oil has leaked out. I am looking for guidance on how to diagnose the source of the problem solve it. See oil leaking below the Cord in the photos, and possible source
I am looking for guidance on what the next steps should be to solve this issue. I purchased Lubriplate SPO-277 as recommended for the transmission by Jim Obrien. Also, an idea has come up that we should try some transmission stop leak, but I would like to hear your advice on that Bar Stop Transmission leak
Should we just try to stop the leak, or proceede directly to diagnosing the leaking seal? I am wondering about where to get that serviced, parts availability.
Thank you for your guidance! Steve Jenkins
Terry, Pat and Jim, I greatly appreciate your guidance. We are continuing to take things slow here to investigate the leak. Yesterday we removed the transmission oil filter and did find quite a bit of gunk/fine shavings. Will clean the filter out and will drain the rest of the oil and clean out as much as possible. I saw your comment about not using the Bar manual transmission fluid to stop the leak. One of the mechanics here in Gunnison Colorado was wondering if it could help clean out the gunk/shavings if used as a "flush" before the oil added, or perhaps added to the transmission oil after we check the seals? Just wondering about that, but don't want to gum anything up.
We have also wondered if we need to send the Cord to an ACD expert to have the mechanics tuned up? This restoration was done to a high standard by Mr George Gallo in the 90's , and perhaps some of you know this car. It is certified as an original factory car. I first saw it at the Gateway Auto Museum in Gateway Colorado back in 2014 where I fell in love with it. This museum stores automobiles in a "pickled" state as I was told. The car then had a brief mechanical refresh (new oil and gas, battery) and it was returned to running condition by the Broad Arrow Auction in 2023 where I purchased it. We have put minimal miles on the car since then. It drives and handles great. However, I would love to find the right person to run the car through its paces, check this leak issue, tune up the shifting, and get it ready for the road. Do you have any thoughts about who might be the person to do this?
Thanks and Best Regards, Steve
