Oddly enough, same situation on my 1931 Auburn. The VIN tag and title had 2 numbers reversed. The tag was a repro, but I knew the frame was correct so I made a new VN tag, took the car to DMV for inspection and had a new title generated with the correct VIN. When I discovered a record of the original owner with VIN and engine number they matched the frame. Somewhere along the line, someone transposed 2 numbers.

Many newer vin tags are stamped with modern font. Compare it to a known old tag.

Not sure if it's original. That's a good point: the VIN may have been accidently misprinted on the title.

Frame stamping question was created by ilikescars
I have a 36 Auburn Cabriolet that has a VIN number of 5917F. I understand that the frame # should be 1 thousand less: 4917. I found the frame number to be 4971. May be that the factory worker was dyslexic? Has anyone ever run across this?
