Rather than dismiss the way your car is, it should at least be investigated.
We should not be turning a blind eye to what is actually there.

That "capasitor" looking thing beside the voltage regulator is a radio suspressiong item. Many times they are found on the actual generator.

That's what I would have thought but it clearly didn't and I am not really sure if I should add it now.
It looks like you have a capacitor mounted next to your regulator. What would that be for?

Checked the inside of the firewall and it is as smooth as a babies bottom.
No hole ever.

My car came in boxes with a lot of the work done, not all to my satisfaction.
The previous owner seemed to have a penchant for modernizing the car which I wish he hadn't.
My generator is GCO 4804 A and has two brushes.
To my surprise, I opened the regulator and found that it is totally solid state. (Modernization, Why?)
I have to assume that this will work for my generator or he would not have purchased it so now the question does it need to be polarized or not?
Steve
PS: Hope your recovery is going well. My wife joined the zipper club three years ago and feels better than she had in years.

If the hole was there and filled in you would have a better idea of what to do.

I am not going to dwell on it.
It will be a lot easier to drill the hole later if I decide to go that way than to fill the hole in if I decide later that I don' want it.

According to your records, my generator is CCO 4804A. The 8 I included was questionable at best. My fire wall was drilled for the four hole mount regulator which I do not have.
The regulator I have is a three hole mount regulator and there is the extra hole in the firewall for mounting that a s well.
The regulator looks to have been professionally restored to a very high level.
The AutoLite tag reads two charge regulator but has no model #, Amps, or serial # engraved on the tag
The regulator is 6V and cuts out at 7.3V.
Based on all this there should have been a hole cut into the firewall for the wires, which there was not.
There is a hole drilled behind the generator for the wires to exit the engine compartment.
I am inclined not to drill the hole, what do you think?
Thanks

If the hole was not in the firwall then you could assume it had the early type generator with the regulator mounted on the generator.
The Factory Service Bulletins show how to install a regulator on the firewall and where to drill the hole for the cables.
To tell you the truth I am disappointed at the lack of contributions in the Forums considering the number of people in the club.

I do have that drawing from Stan but the question is weather I should drill the hole or not. ie Why wasn't the hole drilled in the first place.
I am not sure that I should drill the whole just because that's how most of the other vehicles with the firewall mounted regulator were done that way.
Thanks,
Steve

I have not been able to determine the body number.
The Generator is Model # CCO 48048 A ( I think, very hard to read the tag.) with an external regulator.
What perplexes me is that there is no hole in the fire wall by the regulator.
To drill or not to drill, that is the question?
Thanks
Steve
