Sorry, the serial No. tag was a picture from a previous sale. 2988E is the way it appears on the serial no. tag.

I think we're talking about a couple of different speedster s.  The Robin egg blue one does say its 2988E.  But I didn't see a cowl/id tag.

There was one Auburn Speedster that was not supercharged from the factory and is well documented. This is the one. The serial number is 2988E. Yes the car is certified but the car has been repainted and ??? since we saw it several years ago. At the time we saw the car is was cigarette cream. Now it is "Duck Egg Blue" whatever color that is.

The text says it was sent to the Auto Show before the superchargers where ready but there were 18 cars built with earlier serial numbers that all had superchargers.

I see that car is 33018. No s/c or side pipes. But that doesn't mean it wasn't altered between 1935 and the 60's when the list of speedsters and owners was put together. There is no doubt that the factory cast manifolds for inside exhaust.

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

The Mecum car is the same sold at RM Amelia Island in 2019 back when it was a c. 30-year-old restoration in Cigarette Cream. At the time it was believed that this was the sole eight-cylinder speedster built without a supercharger; that one such car was built is documented by factory records, whether or not this is actually it was not known. As Mike said it appears to have an original tag so...? (And no, it has never been put up for Certification to my knowledge.)

Hi Mike: I’m wondering if your reliable sources speaking about a speedster without a supercharged engine might be talking about the one I mentioned that I saw years ago in Rhode Island or Massachusetts?

This car has been around for awhile with the same claims. Last I know of it it was Cigeratte cream. I have been told there was a Speedster made without a supercharged engine, from reliable sources. Don't know if it this one. Looks like a orig. tag though, but not cerfified.

I don't believe the factory ever preduced a six cylinder speedster. The factory did produce at least one s/c speedster with out the external exhaust. There is a s/c coupe around that has that special manifold for inside exhaust . It has a hard top. I know the guys that built that one.

I don’t know anything about the Mecum auction Auburn but their claim about only Auburn speedster without a supercharger is not correct. About 40 or 50 years ago I visited a garage that had a non supercharger speedster. It was in either Rhode Island or Massachusetts. No outside pipes and I believe there was something else that was unique. I believe it was 6 cylinder and my memory is a little fuzzy about the details but it might have also been on a 6 cylinder chassis and possibly the boat tail was a little different. It definitely was a 6 cylinder non supercharged speedster. Weather is was on a 6 or 8 cylinder chassis’s opens up another can of worms such as length of hood, wheel base etc.

There's a non-supercharged 1935 Auburn speedster going to Mecum Kissimmee auction.  Has story to explain why no supercharger but if and engine no. are for later 1935.  Does anyone know anything about this car?  Lot s170 blue or turquoise.  Sorry I couldn't paste pictures or link.
