HEY KIDS

update sorta?

A few weeks ago while attending a local towns annual " pie ' celebration ( This town being a few short miles away from the possible location of the cars original owner).
I talked to many of the participating car show owners old and young with their local cars on display .
I asked them about the Auburn ,explained what I knew so far and showed them pictures and handed out some fliers I had printed up,
although some stated they had no knowledge of what it was or any possible help to its source , a few spoke of a local police officer /car guy who grew up in the area and should know "something".
It was during this conversation with a few show car owners that this officer was nearby they called him over ,
I introduced myself ... started to explain of my quest, handed him a flier he looked at it handed it back and said "don't waste your time " and walked away?

huh?
Why the curt response at his citys social celebration ?
Did he know something making his answer a true fact?
???
interesting isn't it?
sadly the local historical society storage facility was burned thru arson..almost all documents and photos were lost....related ???
well I'm still searching...........

SALE COULD HAPPEN SOON ..any interest?

I really think that you have been chasing ghosts that have long since gone to that great junkyard in the sky.
It might be time to sell what few body parts you do have,
to someone here that may need them~~~
AND~~~
Move-On to another Quest.

well here's an update sorta
I slipped on ice new years eve and have a pinched nerve in my middle upper back...after 7 doctors visits and numerous scans .. I am now in a 8 week therapy program and await getting better..
it hurts to sit .. in a chair or in a car and my left arm is 70%numb

we also are near the end of daily radiation treatments on my girlfriend which started in middle November...

enuf of the whining and to the important stuff

so now whats happening with the AUBURN

YUP a few folks from here have expressed some intrest in the "parts"or the whole pile

its now buried by our 30 inch plus snow

this week I was able to sit a few times and compose a poster which I started to distribute in the GRANDY area ..there is two local auctions today FEB. 5th and each auctioneer gladly said they would post the information .. they believed that some action will come of the poster... they both have older long time residents that attend thier auctions.

they also thought it was a interesting quest..

Basicly the color poster shows the GRANDY name plate new and rusty old a pic of the cowls current condition and a pic of a blue restored AUBURN from the middle of the front door forward(the pic i used was from a 2door)
a request for info and a brief listing of the history I knew..
I used the blue 2 door because it would have most resmbled the car I have ..I know it shows a 12 cyl car but heck its close enuf???

other than that?

the mice have gotten into my casino birthday prize 2010 MERCEDES C63 AMG before I could get it into the new car capsule .
I bought one then after being misshiped and the delivered after xmas ,I got hurt..then our furace quit so it was to cold to unfold the bubble..so after getting the garage stall above 60 degrees..I started it up JAN 13th and couple dozen acorns shot out the exhaust... darn it I hate being laid up..
then while zipping up the bubble the zipper broke on one side .. we have it duct taped now and inflated and as of yet don't see any varmits inside the bubble ...

we are at the lake place this weekend to take down xmas decorations up since the day after thanksgiving..

is it spring yet?

How is your search comming along ?

Did you ever check-out the large old abandonded estate property that is now for sale; or has just sold ?

Did you ever speak to the scrap metal fellow who sold you these Auburn body parts ?
He should be your key to finding the chassis; IF it in fact still exists.
I assume he remembers where he picked-up these body parts.

Has anyone on this forum , or the AACA forum. expressed an interest in buying any of your old parts ?
If so~~~ You should strongly consider selling them to a restorer that can actually use them !
I think most here suspect that these body parts have been sitting around outside for decades; and were possibly removed from the Auburn many years ago. We also suspect that the chassis is now long gone !

I do hope you find a new home for some of these parts with some Auburn collector/owner or restorer here.

Sadly some cars must be parted-out so that better more complete survivors may live long into the future !

I also hope you get your money out of these fairly rare parts and perhapps make a little bit of money too ~

Good Luck & and keep searching for those hidden barn-finds !
I hope you find a rare and more complete car next time.
It's the thrill of the hunt for that long-lost hidden treasure ~
Along with that great history and owner story of these great car's past lives~

That is what keeps all of us car collectors searching barns, fields and garages all over the world !

Some great finds are still hidden out there somewhere ~

I know because Dad & I found & bought a great Classic 1927 Springfield Rolls~Royce Phantom I out of a Pennsylvania barn some years ago~
What a thrill that really was ~
And what fun it has been tracing it's past history and long past lives~
But that's a story for another time and place !

update sorta..
i talked the tavern owner in Grandy she had no knowledge of the car or remembered any one who might have had such a car but she is getting the name and number of people that had owned a large junkyard in the 50's and 60's .. not far from downtown Grandy.
And some other numbers of folks that have been in town the longest...

she also said that she'd hang up a flier in the bar for people to view ..

she said alot of older locals stop in.....

stay tuned ..

Replied by johnmereness on topic Just needs paint
Just needs paint. Maybe a little body filler.

Barb and I looked at a house and she mispoke and said it needed 5000 dollars of paint - I looked at her broke out laughing and said "got that right and 50k in labor to get it on the walls.' We passed

If you finally decide to sell the Auburn parts you should post a For Sale advert here in the proper Auburn pars for sale section~
Give the ad some time posted here to let the word spread; and I am sure your , dash & gauges, fenders, cowl & firewall, sidemount brackets, hood assembly, windshield assemblys, and the small parts you do have will be wanted by some owner/restorer.
The window regulator systems in your doors also.~ not necessarily the doors themselves.
Almost any Auburn parts should be sought after by some folks on this forum~
So~~~~ do not junk anything just yet !
The market for these sort of Auburn parts would be extremely liimited~
Also~~~ Don't expect to get a ton of money for the parts you do have~
Remember~~~ Condition matters with steel parts~~~
These body parts are very rusty indeed !

If you receive offers on these parts~~~ I suggest you should accept them ! ~~~~
The Auburn parts market is very limited .
Sadly there are not many potential buyers out there !

Best of Luck whatever you decide to do !

okay hows this ...
what is usable of this pile? .. i would think the firewall and some of the cowl has a potential place in another car .. the firewall/ cowl base is used in most 32/33 models isn't it ?
the windshield and frame,doors/innards .. same way...

i know the smaller removeable parts , handles, linkage ,screws and misc. hardware are saleable and some body panels/parts should be good for a non primo type car

i have had some offere on the dash and hood .. ???
i will be keeping the dash/gauge panel unless ....$$$$$

we'll see what i can come up with for the remainder thats missing before i let it get more cut up...if thats not being too unrealistic .. lol

The "Pile" of Auburn body parts looks to have been sitting outside for a very long time indeed.
Sadly the steel is now heavily rusted ~
It is now pretty far gone~
I also see what appear to be holes in a door from a shotgun blast or BB gun.

I suspect this car was in fact stripped decades ago.

In any event ~
If you are still determined to try to find the chassis and driveline ~

Try to talk with the scrap man you bought these parts from.
Often these guys will not want to tell you where they "Found" anything~
There may be more parts and scrap at this same location~
He may want this scrap too !

I would slip this junk man a nice cash tip if he would be willing to tell you exactly where he obtained the body parts~

Money often gets these guys talking.

Who knows~
The remainder of the Auburn might have been to heavy for the scrap man to carry off in his old pick-up truck~

It's a long shot at best~
But you never really know ?

Best Of Luck !

thats the main search now is where it was sitting before the person I got it from .. it was on a scrapload when the guy found it .. THIS WAS THE ENTIRE PICK UP LOAD FROM THAT DAY ..so the trail is vague from before that.. I have tried to get more info on that trail and its a dead end ..
no names no dates nothing..
one person says that alot of metal was being hauled out of a recently sold Grandy property previously owned by the potato machine mfr.family..
I have yet to find any human on this spot in 21/2 months....CHECKING WEEKENDS WEEKDAY EVE....still lots of stuff there..viewed thru a tall fence
I was hesitant to leave a note .. but may try that .. maybe the local realtor

my brain is starting to FILL UP .. I'm gonna DRIVE BY THER AGAIN TODAY..

Talk to the neighbors around the property where the car's remains were found. I did that with an MGB I was looking at a few years ago, and got the car's entire story from the gent across the road. I hate to say, use neighbors' nosiness to your benefit, but...use neighbors' nosiness to your benefit.

thanks alot J.K.

getting the pics put on here was wonderful thanks again

info so..far
thru some swap meet buddies I heard of the "big ol'car" that was maybe available locally..
I was given a pic and thru some long research online .. found the salon Auburn was simular
after a few phone calls and some visits to the "pile" a deal was made and it is now in my possession..

on the driver door is mounted a stamped plate that reads" GRANDY"

I assumed it was a official car .. police , fire ,mail,city-mayor ...or maybe even a school bus?

I started talking to local people.... implement dealer , junk yard ,long established mechanics , a few elderly residents .. showing them pictures of the cowl in hope someone would remember the "Auburn",car, owner .. even just the pile/.. just the split windshield?

one place i visited was the local antique store... the owner there knew nothing of the car .. but did recognize the GRANDY plate .. he showed me a near new one ...it was from the Cloverdalee Creamery .. located in Grandy .. he had bought the old cereamy building in the 70's and found the stamped plates in the office ..the creamery was out of business in the late 30's early 40's.. the plates were used as- advertising or for locating the rural farms that supplied to the dairy or as a sign for milk pick-up?

Why one sign would be put on the driver door?

A little more research turned up that a manufacturer of a potato digging machine was based in Grandy in the 20's -30's the owner became a wealthy man .. started a local potato empire and then moved away to a bigger nearby town the machine is still being produced today

some family and relitives still live in the area.. had he owned the car?

one place Ineed to check with still. is the local tavern where a woman works part time . she is now one of the few locals that was around since the time frame I'm searching

sadly one 80+gentleman I was hopefully going to interview passed away about the time I started my research .. He was the eldest longtime resident and a car guy to boot...

so I will continue my quest we go thru this town a few time a week and stop and ask most people we see ...

I AM STILL LOOKING FOR CURRENT PICTURES OF THIS MODEL
THANKS

Hot rodders love the guage panels from the 31-33 Auburns. Tho they have been re-popped for these guys.

Unbolt everything that you can. If the bolts have a 'W' or 'N' on the head, save them. Maybe save the firewall. There is a Startix on it that may have some value, however it is a electric/mechanical device that I would guess is a rough as the rest of it. I am sure there are some club members that would be interested in purchasing the lot of small parts. Recycle the rest.

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
Be of Good Cheer

I posted a reply over at AACA and will repost here for all to see:

"Hello,

Respectfully speaking there is a wealth of info on the ACD forum and I'm sure you'll get some feedback from your post.

Based on what I can see from your photos I would wager this was a 1933 8-105 or 8-105A car in Salon trim. It was definitely an 8 cylinder as the hood has 26 louvers and 12 cylinder hoods have 31 louvers. And it is definitely a Salon as it sports the split windshield. The only year this car was made was 1933 as in 1932 there was no split windshield available and in 1934 the 8 cylinder cars had a completely new design.

1933 and 1934 Auburn Salon cars are rare to be sure, but there are several examples of 8-105 and 8-105A cars running around out there. Incidentally they were available with dual sidemounts so the presence of such doesn't indicate anything about 8 cylinder vs 12 cylinder.

Personally I love the 33 and 34 Salon cars - they are my favorites! I hope you can find more of this car or, in the case that you can't, I hope you will make these parts available to an Auburn person who is in need of them. It would be amazing to get another of these back on the road. If I was closer to you I would love to come take a look at them myself!"

Here are the photos that were posted:

I too would love to hear more thoughts on these parts!

Thanks,
Justin

I told this fellow to post his Auburn find here.
He has photos posted on the AACA forum site under General listing. Auburn from Minn.
You might wish to check-out his post there as I cannot re-post his AACA forum photos here.
This fellow found basically a pile of disassembled Auburn body parts that he is trying hard to ID.
He is also looking for the original chassis, engine etc in hopes of possibly putting this car back together~ I think this might be a long shot at best~
There is not very much to work with here as far as a restoration goes~
Basically all he found are some body parts.

BUT~
He did find some Auburn body parts that some here may need~
If you need them I suggest you contact him with an offer !
