Do not get it Sandblasted as heat with little left petrol might cause a explosion, but will for sure leave enough sand in the tank to clog up the fuel lines, no matter how well you clean out the tank, sand is forced into the steel by blasting. With vibration sand will come out of that steel !
This at first.

You can get it chemically rust and paint striped and well neutralized, or sand the outside, fill some wood-screws in the tank with hot water degeasing soap and slosh arround well for a while ( concrete mixer works well or old waschingmachine ) make sure that you get all dirt and screws out again, then use a hot-water-pressure-gun to clean inside and out.

Next stage is to use a good tank-sealer like LJF PR 1005 L.
I have done several tanks in the past 12 years and had no trouble at all.
good luck.heres the link

My tank was dirty and had a big dent in one corner. I took it to a place in Stockton, CA and they did a nice job. Took out the dent and cleaned and sealed it. This was four or so years ago. As I remember it cost a little over $200. The process is called Renu and they are located all over the country. The number to call to locate a shop near you is: 800-997-3688

My Westchester's gas tank has rust particles that are about the same size as beach sand. I can't drive it very far because it plugs up the fuel pump and filter. What do I need to do? Drain it and then what? Is there a way to clean it or do I need to put in a new one? And if a new one is the way to go, who makes something that will fit in the 810?
